Digital Engraver VS Stick On Labels

When using stick on labels, which many of us who produce our own CD's do, a few things need to be taken into consideration. First off, how well are the labels sticking on the CD's. I noticed that on a few of the CD's I had made and put the stick-on labels on, were actually getting stuck in the CD player. The CD's were easy enough to get out with a little effert and a thin tool, but it concened me as to the effect it was having on the CD player itsself. Not to mention I didn't want people who had purchased my CD to have the problem and not wanting to go through the hassle of removing the CD and there for make the decision not to play it.

I have been looking into the possibility of purchasing a Digital Engraver for my music CD's. I have found several that I think may be suitable, but as yet have not made a decision. There are some where you type in the words to appear on the CD and that is it. There are others that actually require ink and will color the CD and make designs and logo's as well.  Of course the latter is more expensive. Then of course to help on the cost, you could purchase a colored CD and then just print the information on the CD. The problem with this is that I believe there is a maximum of information (characters) that can be put on the CD which may limit the ideas you have.

I have looked on ebay and did find both sorts of laser and ink engravers available but with such a purchase would want some sort of guarantee and for the product to be in an unopened box. Then again, purchasing from a store would ensure hassle free return should the product not work as I think it should. I am still looking into the possibility of purchasing either a laser or ink engraver and will let you know what I decide. If anyone has either one of these products I would appreciate a review on it.

Starting in September, the fairs and festivals begin popping up everywhere. In Oklahoma there are several fall festivals going on now, or will be in the next month or two. I have a list of a few of the festivals that will be having live entertainment. It's not too late to give them a call to see if they have a need for a few more entertainers. If I have not posted a number or email for contact purposes, all you have to do is call the towns Chamber Of Commerce and they will be able to direct you to the person in charge of the enterainment segment of the festival.  If you do perform at a festival or fair, please let me know so I can post your experience for those who may be thinking about that particular venue for next year.  If you are aware of any fairs and festivals that offer live entertainment, please let me know so I may post it to the site.  Thanks

Singing Outside

This weekend I sang at a very good friends wedding. The wedding was held at a public park, and rain was in the forcast. I was worried that the rain would come while I was singing and really worried about my equipment getting wet. The plug in we would have to use was located across the street from the gardens where the wedding would be held.

The first plan was for the music to be down the walkway inside the garden. Due to the threat of rain, we made the decision to put the equipment just outside the entry archway into the garden, so if it did start to rain, I could unplug and as quickly as possible, get my equipment under a pavillion.  Due also to this change, my mic cord was not long enough for me to stand in front of the speakers.

I practiced a few songs, having someone stand in the gardens to make sure the sound was okay and everything was heard. At the last minute, before people started arriving, I made another change.  I didn't really feel comfortable with the music in front of me where I couldn't hear it very well.  An after thought I had was that I should have brought earphones then there would have been no problem at all. But that was an after thought and didn't do me any good at the time.  I scooted the speakers back just enough where I could get in front of one of them.

At least I could hear the music, but the mic cord was still too short for me to face the crowd. They were a little to the side though and shouldn't have been facing me anyway so that wasn't too bad.  I ended up having to stand sideways and sing to the flowers that were in front of me.  If anyone was video taping, I can imagine what that looked like. Anyway, I was told it sounded great, which I was pleased about. It was the Bride and Grooms day, not mine and I did not want to be in the spot light at all.  The rain held off and Brenda Decker became Mrs Eric Welch on August 25th 2007.

When singing outside many things need to be taken into consideration. The weather, rain, snow, the heat, how the sound from the speakers sounds and travels differently than when inside. Where to place the equipment, where I was, the grass was still wet. Fortunately there were bricks that I sat my equipment on to keep it off the wet grass. The wedding was down in the garden, and I was just outside the garden. Therefore in a situation like this I could not hear my cues when it was time for me to sing. Arrangements had to be made ahead of time with a person in the garden to signal me when it was time for me to sing.

When singing outside take everything into consideration to make sure you sound your best. You never know who will be listening.

Managing New Entertainers

I just found out that a fellow singer/songwriter has gone into managing. Jeff Goodin used to be in a rock band several years ago. He decided along with his wife and family to give up the touring time and spend that time with his family.  Jeff continued to write songs, as many of us do, with no thought as to what he would do with the songs written. For many of us, when the words and music hit, you have to write it down.

In the last few months Jeff decided to go to the recording studio and get some of  stuff down on tape with thoughts of maybe sending it to some artist in hopes they would listen to and want to record his music. I have heard his demo and think it is great. Of course I have my own favorites.

Jeff came upon a young artist at the studio and just for the heck of it asked her to sing a few of his songs. One inpaticular song is called " The Table At The Door"  She did a great job in the recording of the song. Jeff began to pitch the song around to a few radio stations and I am proud to announce that it is getting some airplay in the Texas area.

Instead of waiting on the studio or other factors, Jeff approached the young lady with an offer to be her manager.  He said instead of sitting around waiting for someone else to do it, or just letting the song sit around collecting dust he decided to really get in the swing and push it.

Lacy is now appearing in several places around Texas and getting more radio time as well. Congratulations Jeff on taking the inituitive to get your songs heard. Also Jeff has taken on another new talent, Tyler Wade.
